A physics event on light

SPECTRUM 3.0

Light, taken apart.

A day of optics for the curious: prisms, lenses, lasers and interference. Live workshops and hands-on experiments that pull white light into its colours.

Date
Monday, 26 October 2026

What is white light made of?

Newton put a prism in a sunbeam and found that white was never one colour. It was all of them, travelling together. SPECTRUM is a day of doing that again, with your own hands: bending light, splitting it, trapping it in glass and reading what it says.

A convex lens bends every ray through one point, almost. Blue focuses a little closer than red.1/f = (n − 1)(1/R1 − 1/R2)

02Live workshops

λ 470–500 nm · cyan

Build the instrument. Then look through it.

Small rooms, real kit, no slides. Every workshop is included with your ticket. Seats go first come, first served at the door.

  • 10:00–11:00·40 seats·All ages

    Build a Spectroscope

Cut a slit, mount a grating and point it at street lights, then read which elements are glowing.

TODO: Workshop leadd sin θ = mλ
  • 11:30–12:45·30 seats·Beginner

    Lenses on the Optical Bench

Find focal lengths by hand, build a telescope from two lenses and see why the image flips.

    TODO: Workshop lead1/f = 1/v − 1/u
  • 13:30–14:30·36 seats·All ages

    Light in a Glass Wire

Trap a laser in a stream of water, then in a fibre. Total internal reflection, and the internet, explained.

TODO: Workshop leadsin θc = n₂ / n₁
  • 14:45–15:45·32 seats·Intermediate

    Polarised: Stress in Plastic

Crossed polarisers turn a plastic ruler into a rainbow map of the stress locked inside it.

TODO: Workshop leadI = I₀ cos²θ
  • 16:00–17:00·24 seats·Beginner

    Pinhole to Photograph

Turn a box into a camera, expose paper in sunlight and develop it on the spot.

    TODO: Workshop leadd ≈ 1.9 √(fλ)

Touchthe physics

These are the same equations the workshops use. Drag a slider, bend a beam, cross two polarisers. Every number here is calculated live, not animated.

EXP 01

Refraction & total internal reflection

Light slows down in glass and bends. Go the other way, from glass into air, and past one angle it can't get out at all.

EXP 02

Dispersion in a prism

Glass slows violet more than red, so each colour bends by a different amount. Flint glass spreads the fan wider than crown.

EXP 03

Young's double slit

Send one colour through two narrow slits. The light that lands on the screen is a pattern of bright and dark bands, not two lines. That's what waves do.

EXP 04

Diffraction grating

Thousands of tiny slits per millimetre sort light by wavelength, and red lands furthest out. This is the heart of every spectroscope.

EXP 05

Polarisation, Malus's law

A polariser only lets through light vibrating one way. Cross two of them and the light fades to nothing, at exactly 90°.

Colour is frequency

Red light waves are almost twice as long as violet ones. Shorter waves wiggle faster and each photon carries more energy.

07FAQ

λ 700–750 nm · red

Questions, refracted.

Something else? Write to us. We reply within two days.

Who is SPECTRUM for?

Anyone curious about light: students, parents, teachers, hobbyists. No physics background needed. Every workshop starts from zero.

I'm a student. How do I get my ticket?

Your academy registers you and we email your ticket, which admits you plus one parent. Can't find it? Use Find my ticket with the email your academy has on record.

Can my parent come in separately?

Yes. Your ticket has two entries: one for you and one for your parent. Each can be scanned on its own, at different times.

Do I need to print my ticket?

No. Show the QR on your phone, or on paper if you prefer. Turn your screen brightness up at the gate.

Are workshops included?

Yes, with every ticket. Seats are first come, first served at each room. Arrive five minutes early.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, up to 72 hours before the event. See Cancellation & Refunds for the details.

Is it safe for kids? Are there lasers?

All lasers are Class 2 or lower and run by our team. Children under 12 must be with an adult.
